Press release – FITA – for immediate release

We commend the efforts of SARS Customs officers stationed at the Durban harbour who yesterday seized a large container of allegedly illegally imported cigarettes which appear to be counterfeits of FITA member Gold Leaf Tobacco’s Chicago brand.

The cigarettes were stashed in 900 boxes in the container, and were allegedly declared as furniture.

FITA and its members welcome the seizure and applaud the efforts of SARS in combatting the illegal trade which has of late ...

Press release – FITA – for immediate release

As an organisation we have for long advocated the necessity of transforming the local tobacco industry and have lobbied government in this regard. By way of example, our members were previously precluded, via a number of underhanded practices by some of the multinationals, from buying tobacco from our local farmers.

The winding up of the Tobacco Institute of Southern Africa (“TISA”) gives our members and other tobacco industry role players slight hope that the ...

Press release – FITA – for immediate release

We note yesterday’s (22 January 2020) media announcement that tobacco industry body the Tobacco Institute of Southern Africa (“TISA”), an organization which represented primarily foreign interests, and which misleadingly claimed to represent the entire legal tobacco sector in South Africa, has announced that “it is to wind up its operations. Its members have taken a decision to redeploy their resources to fulfil their individual strategic objectives”. We however cannot say that we are ...

We have over the last 3 months assisted the South African Police Service in seizing over 4 000 master cases of cigarettes, which quantity would attract over R 38 million in taxes alone, smuggled through our various border posts from our neighbouring countries. This amount is only ...

Press release – FITA – for immediate release

We have today, after many attempts at engagement, served a request on British American Tobacco South Africa (“BATSA”) in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act, Act 2 of 2000 (“PAIA”).

In September 2016 BATSA announced that it had severed ties with forensic investigation firm Forensic Security Services(“FSS”) which had been accused of illegally spying on BATSA’s competitors and colluding with law enforcement agencies to force competitors out of the market.

It has ...

Press release – FITA – for immediate release

We note and welcome the announcement by Finance Minister Tito Mboweni that the South African Revenue Service is to commission a study into the size of the country’s illicit economy, which study would look into inter alia the size of the illicit trade in cigarettes which has dominated talk in the media for the last number of years largely in part due to the desire of multinational tobacco companies to overstate the size ...

Press release – FITA – for immediate release

We commend the continued efforts of both the South African Revenue Service (“SARS”) and the South African Police Service (“SAPS”) in ensuring that compliance risks in the tobacco industry along the value chain are kept at a minimum. The detention of a truck containing 1166 cases of cigarettes worth more than R 11 million excluding profit margins (Excise R 8 330.00 + VAT  = R 9579.50 x 1166 = R 11 169 697.00), and not over ...
