Press release – FITA – for immediate release
Over the last few months multinational tobacco companies have embarked on an aggressive
media campaign on the back of the controversial and misleading IPSOS report highlighting,
amongst others, the negative effects of the illicit trade in cigarettes on the economy and the
people of South Africa. It is common knowledge that we, as the Fair-Trade Independent
Tobacco Association (“FITA”), have long questioned the veracity of the aforementioned
report.
Our suspicions in relation ...

As previously indicated, FITA had been made aware of a new “strategy” that has been utilised by the Tobacco Institute of Southern Africa (“TISA”), an organization which represents foreign interests and which misleadingly claims to represent the legal tobacco sector in South Africa and some of its members. Amongst other things, this “strategy” specifically states that the intention is to target FITA members, and to do so by among other things “Securing regional ...

The man who blew the whistle on the alleged racket of bribes relating to British American Tobacco (BAT) says he and his wife still get death threats.

Press release – FITA – for immediate release

FITA stands for fair trade practices in the tobacco industry.

One cannot but take note of the recent public exposures of multi-nationals and their role in regulatory and state capture in South Africa. Notably, these include international brands, McKinsey, Bell Pottinger, KPMG, SAP and Bain & Company. Common to all is how they purport to have launched “internal investigations” which ultimately are never made public.

British American Tobacco, a multi-national in the tobacco industry, has ...

Press release – FITA – For Immediate Release

We have previously stated our view on the illicit trade issue. Whilst the Fair-Trade
Independent Tobacco Association (“FITA”) fully supports any effort by the state and affected
industry stakeholders to curb smuggling and the illicit trading in cigarettes, we feel that
smuggling, although a problem, pales in comparison to the vast amounts of profits which
leave our shores as a result of the local tobacco industry being monopolised by foreign
owned multinationals who ...
