Press release – FITA – for immediate release

We do not wish to give any legitimacy to Tax Justice South Africa and its so-called investigation, the concocted findings of which must be rejected with contempt. We are further not surprised by the opportunistic and choreographed statements issued thereafter from organizations which appear to be nothing more than lapdogs of Big Tobacco.

In any event we note that the overwhelming majority of the cigarette brands mentioned in the “investigation” do not belong to ...

Press Statement – FITA – for immediate release

We note the decision by government to appeal the decision of the full bench of the Western Cape High Court which held that Regulation 45 of the lockdown level 3 regulations cannot and does not withstand constitutional scrutiny.

We feel that this step by government is regrettable given the irreparable harm on the tobacco industry along its value chain which was occasioned by the 5 month-long ban on the sale of cigarettes and tobacco ...

Press release – FITA – for immediate release

We note and welcome the judgment of the full bench of the Western Cape High Court which held that Regulation 45 of the lockdown level 3 regulations cannot and does not withstand constitutional scrutiny. The court further found Regulation 45 to be neither necessary nor that it furthered the objectives set out in section 27(2) of the Disaster Management Act. This of course was one of the arguments advanced by FITA in its ...

Press release – FITA – for immediate release

We condemn the uninformed and precipitous statement by trade union federation COSATU supporting a 100% tax hike on tobacco products.

It is quite mind-boggling that there are sections of society pushing government to increase excise on cigarettes. Such a move would be nothing short of disastrous for both the fiscus & the legitimate tobacco industry and the thousands of people employed along its value chain.

It is well-documented that the smuggling of cigarettes from our ...

FITA Press Release – for immediate release

We note the statement by TJSA, an organization allegedly concerned with criminals avoiding tax on a broad scale, and yet with an inordinate focus on the local cigarette market, and in particular the affairs of local cigarette manufacturers, and must say it doesn’t come as a surprise given their obsession of late with FITA member GLTC, which happens to be the manufacturer being targeted by multinationals in what seems to be a battle for ...

Press release – FITA – for immediate release

We call upon government to immediately clarify a tweet posted on the official government twitter account (@GovernmentZA) earlier today stating that the ban on the sale of alcohol and cigarette (sic) will remain in place throughout the lockdown period.

This statement contradicts government’s previous position on this issue, with inter alia President Cyril Ramaphosa and Minister Jackson Mthembu both stating on a number of occasions publicly that it was only a matter of time ...

Our Application for Leave to Appeal the full bench of the High Court ruling of 26 June 2020 which dismissed our application challenging the cigarette ban during the lockdown period was heard earlier today.

We are once again very happy with the arguments raised by our legal team and we now await the ruling of the Court.

Judgment in the matter has been reserved and the Court has said that it will deliver judgment on whether we ...
